Asian and Hispanic Skin - Irregular Pigmentation
I. Introduction:
Asian (people from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia) and Hispanic skin is darker than northern European skin because of the increased amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment in the skin and protects the skin from sunlight. This keeps Asian people looking younger than white skinned people. The melanin pigment in the skin protects the skin from sunlight and slows down the aging process. As Asian and Hispanic people age, their skin often becomes irregularly pigmented. This shows up as dark patches on the skin. Irregular pigmentation can also be caused by inflammation. If an area of the skin becomes inflamed or red from an insect bite or from an acne pimple, a brown area can be left behind as the redness or inflammation subsides.

II. Causes of Irregular Pigmentation:
  • Sun exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills and hormone treatment with estrogen
  • Inflammation from insect bites, acne, trauma, or other causes
Apogee Elite laser offers you the ability to erase evidence of years of sun damaged skin. Laser is a quick and safe way to remove sun and age spots from your face, chest, arms, and hands with no downtime! The signs of sun damage will disappear after one or two treatments, leaving you with clear, younger looking skin.
What areas can be treated?
Almost any part of your body with sun and age spots or freckles can be safely treated. The face, chest, shoulders, and arms are the most popular because they have typically had the most sun exposure.
What does the treatment do?
The pigmented spots on your skin absorb the visible light delivered by the laser. In turn, the heating destroys the pigment.
What do treatments feel like?
When the pulse of light is delivered, you may feel a mild, brief pinching sensation; however, we will provide continuous cooling to minimize any discomfort.
How long will the treatment take?
They usually take just a few minutes and can be done on your lunch hour!
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, one or two treatments are sufficient. Additional treatments may be required for very large or dark spots or for densely covered areas.
How safe are these treatments?
These treatments are very safe with low side effects. Apogee Elite laser is FDA approved for these treatments.
What happens after the treatment ?
Immediately after treatment, the spots start to darken, and over the course of a few weeks, darkened spots will fade and flake off.
Will the spots reappear over time?
No. However, new spots may appear with continued sun exposure. Sunscreen is always recommended.
